Door Bolting: How to Keep Your Dog Safe When the Door Opens

Does your dog rush the door the moment someone reaches for the handle?

Door bolting may look like excitement, but it can quickly become a serious safety issue. A dog that darts through an open front door can run into traffic, get lost, approach another dog, or put themselves and others in danger.

The good news is that door bolting is a behavior that can be addressed with proper training, structure, and consistency.

Why Do Dogs Bolt Through Doors?

Dogs may rush through doors for several reasons. They may be excited to greet a person, eager to explore, chasing an interesting scent, or simply have learned that an open door means “go!”

The important thing is to teach your dog that an open door does not automatically mean they are free to run through it.

Teach Your Dog to Wait

One of the most important skills for preventing door bolting is teaching your dog to pause and wait for your direction.

Practice around your home’s doors when there are no distractions. Ask your dog to stay back from the doorway, reach toward the handle, and gradually increase the difficulty. The goal is for your dog to remain calm and wait until you give permission to move forward.

Consistency matters. Everyone in the household should follow the same rules.

Don’t Wait for a Real-Life Emergency

The front door is not the place to discover that your dog’s obedience isn’t reliable.

Practice regularly so that waiting at the door becomes a normal behavior. Work on the skill with different doors, different family members, and eventually with realistic distractions such as someone knocking or ringing the doorbell.

Your dog needs to learn that the rule applies even when something exciting is happening.

Door Bolting Is More Than an Obedience Problem

A dog that bolts through an open door can be exposed to situations you cannot control. Training provides your dog with boundaries and gives you greater control when doors open unexpectedly.

At Elite Dog Training, door bolting is one of the common behavior issues we address through personalized, in-home training. Because training takes place in your actual home, we can work with your dog in the environment where the problem occurs.

If your dog is charging the door, don’t wait for the day they finally get out. The right training can help create calmer, safer habits for your dog and your entire family.
